How Discount Calculations Work
A discount is a reduction applied to the original price of a product or service. Our calculator supports four common discount types:
- Percentage Discount: The most common type. Formula:
Savings = Original Price × Discount% ÷ 100. Final Price = Original − Savings. - Flat Amount Off: A fixed currency amount is deducted. Example: ₹200 off a ₹1,500 item → final price ₹1,300 (13.3% off).
- Buy One Get One (BOGO): For every item purchased, alternate items are free. Effective discount = 50% when buying 2.
- Price + Tax: Enter the base price and tax rate (e.g. 18% GST) to see the final tax-inclusive price and tax amount separately.
Working Backwards — Find Original Price from Sale Price
If you see a sale price and want to know the original: Original = Sale Price ÷ (1 − Discount% ÷ 100). Example: an item sells for ₹800 after 20% off → Original = 800 ÷ 0.80 = ₹1,000.
Stacked Discounts
When two discounts apply (e.g. 20% off + extra 10%), the effective discount is NOT simply 30%. It's: Final = Price × (1−0.20) × (1−0.10) = Price × 0.72 → 28% off. This calculator handles single discounts; for stacked discounts, apply them sequentially.
Real-World Shopping Tips
- Compare the percentage saved, not just the rupee amount — 20% off ₹2,000 (saves ₹400) is better than 30% off ₹1,000 (saves ₹300) if you need the same product.
- BOGO deals are effectively 50% off per item, but only if you need two units.
- Coupon codes often stack with sale prices — check if the retailer allows combining offers.
- GST is calculated on the post-discount price, not the original price, when a discount is offered upfront.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate 30% off ₹1,500?
30% of ₹1,500 = ₹1,500 × 0.30 = ₹450 savings. Final price = ₹1,500 − ₹450 = ₹1,050. Or simply: ₹1,500 × 0.70 = ₹1,050.
What is the difference between discount and markdown?
A discount is a temporary reduction offered to a customer (sale, coupon). A markdown is a permanent reduction in the listed price of an item, usually to clear old inventory.
Is GST calculated before or after discount?
As per Indian GST rules, when a seller offers a discount that is known at the time of supply and shown on the invoice, GST is calculated on the post-discount price (not the original price).
How is BOGO different from 50% off?
They're mathematically equivalent when buying exactly 2 units of the same item. But BOGO requires buying two — you may not need the second item. A 50% off deal is better if you only need one item.
